Professor Brault's specialty is Old French literature, notably the Song of Roland,but he also made forays into the Tristan poems, medieval heraldry, and New England French-Canadian (Franco-American) studies.
He has published the following books: Celestine: A Critical Edition of the First French Translation (1527) of the Spanish Classic La Celestina (1963); Cours de langue française destiné aux jeunes Franco-Américains (1963, rpt. 1965, 1969); Early Blazon: Heraldic Terminology in the Twelfth and Thirteenth Centuries with Special Reference to Arthurian Literature (1972, rpt. 1997); Eight Thirteenth-Century Rolls of Arms in French and Anglo-Norman Blazon(1973); The Song of Roland: An Analytical Edition (2 vols., 1978); La Chanson de Roland: Student Edition (1984);The French-Canadian Heritage in New England (1986); Rolls of Arms of Edward I (1272-1307) (2 vols., 1997). He has also written well over a hundred articles that have appeared in leading American and European scholarly journals.
